March 2022 – Last month it was hurricanes, this time it was tech gremlins!
Nothing, it seems, can stop a Chamber hybrid breakfast.
The sound quality was an issue for a while until the cause of the “interference” was identified – but we won’t embarrass the person responsible!
Guest speaker Sharon Jenkins explained the importance of local information for communities in her presentation.
Local is good!
It is quite a challenge to edit and produce 19 monthly local issues of In Touch magazine, but Sharon manages it with skill and good humour. She explained why it matters to her.
Sharon was born and raised in a small community in Galway, Ireland, and studied Communications and Media. Her first role was in local radio, followed by a position publicising the various community projects at the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich. So the move to Mansion House, to take over editing the In Touch series, was entirely logical.
The last two years of the Covid pandemic had made life more difficult, she said. Luckily, they still managed to publish their monthly issues throughout. It emphasised the importance of providing information relevant to the communities each magazine serves. That is still the case, but now an equally important task is helping small local businesses to reconnect with their customers and return to full activity.
“I think there’s something really powerful about having local connections, and knowing who to go to in a crisis,” she said. “I think local Chambers are part of that.”
She encouraged local businesses to engage with their potential customers by using all the facilities, both editorial and advertising, provided by the local magazines.
