June 2024 – Numbers stay high at breakfast

Our breakfast meetings continue to be popular both in person and online.

Owen Williams gave us some helpful advice about staying safe online

Guest speaker, Owen Williams, of West View IT had some timely advice to avoid various online scams.

His talk was particularly pertinent given that small businesses are most likely to be targeted by scammers.

Scammers, he said, look for the easiest targets and their preferred method is to use email, Therefore, make sure yours is set up correctly using an SPF record. DMARC works with SPF to check that an email purporting to be from you is genuine. There is one in 14,6000 chance of being struck by lightning, but by comparison, the chances of your email being used for a scam are 1:1.

He outlined some of the most common scams:

  • Phishing is when someone is trying to get information from you. To identify a phishing scam check for spelling errors, typos, questions and urgency in the messages.
  • Spear phishing: this is being very specific and will try to learn as much as possible about their target.
  • Whaling: is when the scammer pretends to be someone senior in your company’s management team and targets a junior member of the team to get information.
  • The next likely scam is Quishing: This is where a fake sticker is used on top of a genuine QR code.

Owen said that if you want to be extra sure you are cyber safe, then you can get a certification from the UK Government via Cyberessentials.
