June 2022 – A little-known and very worthy cause
After some networking, and the usual excellent Mix breakfast (for those who were there in person), we learned more about a charity that goes to the aid of medical emergencies.
Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS)
Gina Saunders gave a presentation on the work of SARS, a charity supporting the ambulance service and staffed entirely by medical professionals in their free time.
The service was first started in Yorkshire in 1972 by a group of GPs to support rural communities and has since grown across the UK. It receives no government or NHS funding, relying entirely on volunteer donations.
Now in its 50th year, the service covers all medical emergencies called in on the 999 lines to provide pre-hospital care. Because it is staffed by medically-trained people, it can offer pain relief, reduce permanent disabilities and save lives.
It has covered everything from cardiac arrests to falls and even sports injuries. In the last year alone, it has provided 7,000 hours of emergency help at 160 incidents.
This year, the charity is hoping to raise an extra £50,000 in celebration of its 50th anniversary and is challenging 50 volunteers to raise £1000 each.
