October 2017 breakfast: Four guests and updates from Kate

It was lovely to welcome four guests to the October 2017 breakfast.  They were Karen Braybrooke, of Paisley Leaf HR in Needham Market, Sue Hull, from Westhorpe Village Hall, Mark Smyth, of Portable Space Ltd, and Glen Hoddy, of I Roll Up My Sleeves.

Our treasurer, Kate Kelly, had two updates for us:

MSBE – Mid Suffolk Business Exhibition

Within just a few days of bookings opening to non-members on 2nd October, we were practically sold out with just one stand left, a tremendous response, as Kate Kelly said.

We have now opened a waiting list, partly to ensure there is as wide a range of businesses as possible over the 25 stands and partly in case things change between now and 21st March for anyone who has booked.

Bookings will remain open a little longer, probably until the end of October.  Kate thanked both Gipping Press and the Suffolk Chamber for their support.

The priority now is to ensure MSBE gets as much publicity as possible to ensure plenty of visitors on the day, she said. There are both Facebook and Twitter pages for MSBE and it would be helpful if people could share posts as widely as possible.

Stowmarket and District Food Bank

The Chamber has offered the Food Bank, its adopted charity, a free stand at MSBE.  Gipping Press will be running a fund-raising appeal to help the organisation with proper publicity and will match fund donations.

With Christmas soon to be upon us and the further roll-out of Universal Credit, she said, demand on the food bank is likely to intensify. The wait for UC is already causing some people to become homeless or have their fuel supply cut off because of arrears with bills.  The food bank has had people return food they have been given because they have no electricity to cook it.

The Chamber, as last year, will be running a reverse advent calendar where we ask people to put an item a day into a box to make up hampers to bring to the Christmas lunch. We will also be collecting additional food and other donated items at the Christmas lunch.

Christmas lunch is at Stonham Barns on Friday, December 15.
